Hygiene:
- The reason we used to think circumcised boys were cleaner was because we used to think we needed to retract the foreskin back and clean under it like intact men do.
- This is not true and a very dangerous myth to bust.
- Retracting a baby literally means to rip his foreskin back since it is fused to the head of the penis (glans).
- This is very painful, causes infections and worse.
- The foreskin is meant to stay fused to keep bacteria out from the urinary tract just like your daughters hymens keep bacteria from entering the vagina.
- We do not insert our fingers to check the hymen or douche baby girls to keep them clean inside and we should never fiddle with baby penises either.
- If you have intact sons who are never forcibly retracted, you should never have to worry about infection.
- If infection occurs, antibiotics are given just like with baby girls.
- Baby girls develop infections more often than boys do.
- People mistakenly believe the circumcised penis is cleaner because smegma is reduced, but the fact is, smegma is beneficial, not bad.
- "Smegma is probably the most misunderstood, most unjustifiably maligned substance in nature. Smegma is clean rather than dirty. It is beneficial and necessary. It moisturizes the glans and keeps it smooth, soft, and supple. Its antibacterial and antiviral properties keep the penis clean and healthy. All normal male and female mammals produce smegma." - Dr. Thomas J. Ritter from the book "What Doctors Don't Tell You About Circumcision".
- Proper hygiene is all that is necessary.
- Women are harder to keep clean than men but they wash with water, they don’t cut their labia off.
- Cleaning the intact penis takes less time than brushing your teeth.
- For the care of an intact penis, the AAP recommends, “Leave it alone.”
- No special care is required, an intact child should have the external surface of his penis (and the rest of his body) washed regularly to keep clean.
- When a male is older and can retract his foreskin (which typically occurs by puberty), a simple rinsing is all that is necessary.
