Question Circumcision

Babies Don't Feel Pain?:

  • While circumcision is a relatively quick procedure, it is extremely painful for the infant.
  • The initial part of the process involves a forced separation of the foreskin, which is fused to the glans in much the same way as a fingernail is joined to the finger.
  • Although many say anesthesia solves that problem, it doesn't.
  • There are risks associated with anesthesia, including death.
  • It is never 100% effective and the needle stick itself is painful.
  • The AAP says the following about EMLA cream, one of the most common pain relief methods, “The analgesic effect is limited during the phases associated with extensive tissue trauma…” .
  • Although most cannot remember the pain as adults, circumcised male infants have increased pain response in vaccinations 4 to 6 months later.
  • Circumcision appears to lower the pain threshold.
  • Is it okay to slap a baby just because they won't remember it?
  • ‎In hospitals back in 2009, the babies were given "sugar water and baby tylenol" to manage their pain.
  • This is still common practice in spite of numerous professional association and college recommendations to the contrary.
  • No local anesthetic was used; likely this is still the case.
  • If you google search some circumcision consent forms, you will sometimes see what the pain management measures are in that particular facility.
  • Even if local anesthetic is injected, there is no way to tell if a baby is completely frozen.
  • When an adult is frozen for surgery, staff poke them hard with the sharp end of an orange stick and make sure they can't feel sharp sensation.
  • When a nerve is severed, there is no way to prevent it from hurting.
  • When the circumcision is performed, cutaneous nerves are severed.
  • In addition, local anesthetic does not work on the post-operative pain, especially that caused by urinating on an open wound in a diaper.
  • There is NO pain free circumcision.
